Logline

1959: Under South Africa’s brutal pass laws, a young domestic worker, Khethiwe looks to her liberal employer for protection, only to find herself moulded and lectured into acquiescence — until the uneasy bond between mistress and maid threatens to collapse under the weight of power and hypocrisy.

Short Synopsis

1959: A liberal wealthy political activist in apartheid South Africa prides herself on uplifting her newly arrived Black maid, Khetiwe with the English language and Western ideals remaking her in her own image, but when the maid requires a passbook to stay out of the brutal prison system, her employer’s “protection” reveals itself as a promise made on privileged assumptions/ the most dangerous cage of all.

South Africa. 1959. Khethiwe, 19 and hopeful, flees her rural village for the city, chasing survival , without her own passbook that could get her imprisoned. . She lands a job with Mrs. Plum—a wealthy liberal who preaches equality but stops at where she could help Khethiwe get legal papers.. As the threat of arrest looms, Khethiwe realizes the truth: even well meaning allies can reinforce the systems they claim to resist. Her awakening is quiet, fierce, and irreversible.
